GIS file accessibility

Screen Shot 2013-06-19 at 3.54.06 PMGIS files can be accessed in ArchiCAD by conversion of GIS Shape files into DWG files using the following tool: guthrie Arcv2CAD 6.0

Screen Shot 2013-06-19 at 3.54.22 PMFrom the Guthrie website: “…Arcv2CAD 6.0 converts ESRI shapefiles (ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcMap etc.) to AutoCAD DXF and DWG formats. This allows shapefiles to be read by virtually all CAD software, for example AutoCAD, MicroStation, CivilCAD, DesignCAD, SolidWorks, as well as numerous other Mapping and Graphics software, eg CorelDraw, Surfer, World Construction Set...”

Note that the software runs a limited number of sessions in FREE mode, thereafter, it requires a “purchase”. Notwithstanding, we believe that access to GIS Shape files is a necessity for many ArchiCAD users, who may find this a useful solution.

The BIMobject® App now released for ArchiCAD

Screen Shot 2013-06-19 at 12.42.35 PMBIMobject® announced today that the cloud integration App for GRAPHISOFT’s ArchiCAD, the leading Building Information Modeling (BIM) architectural software developer, has been launched. The App is completely free of charge for all users of ArchiCAD worldwide, giving the ArchiCAD user a toolset to find, source, update and check BIM objects supplied through the
http://bimobject.com/
cloud completely integrated in their software.

Screen Shot 2013-06-19 at 12.42.50 PMThe integration is completely unique and is the best-in-class web service integration inside ArchiCAD. The App has functions to quickly browse the BIMobject® cloud database online and find real products from real manufacturers. A simple click to download and the BIM objects are loaded in the ArchiCAD user’s project, ready for placement and further configuration.

Another great feature is the ability to check for updates. The App will check to ensure the actual version of the placed object in your project is the same version as on the cloud. If there is a newer version of the actual product in the cloud, the product information can automatically be transferred to the already downloaded files. This is a feature not seen in any other solution and gives a completely new way for manufacturers to update product data and add new properties to already downloaded objects. This solves the issue of keeping and maintaining data up to date, great for both the user and manufacturer.

The App also consists of a BIMail integration. ArchiCAD users now have the ability to send and receive BIMails directly from inside their BIM software, making ArchiCAD ‘social.’ Manufacturers have the ability to use BIMail to inform users about product news and updates through BIMail inside the ArchiCAD system.

Another thrilling functionality is the featured manufacturer section where building and interior product manufacturers can obtain their own branded button. It opens the private cloud of that particular manufacturer inside ArchiCAD so the user can browse that manufacturer’s products directly. The manufacturers featured will update on a monthly basis through web services, and is directly connected to the cloud solution at
http://bimobject.com/

The App for Windows is available for immediate download at BIMobject.com, GRAPHISOFT.com or from inside the ArchiCAD 17 application. The App is also compatible with ArchiCAD version 15 and 16. The App will be available for Mac in the second half of July.

”We are very excited about the new BIMobject® App for ArchiCAD. We are also proud that we now have the most extensive set of features of any BIMobject® App. This is a revolutionary step, showing the BIM world what cloud can do for us now and in the future,” said Akos Pfemeter, Director of Global Marketing, GRAPHISOFT.

”The new App launched for GRAPHISOFT is the most advanced version of our App technology we have developed so far. It shows a clear path where we are heading with BIM content cloud integration. Manufacturers enter the BIM world for real and can both communicate directly with users and supply them with updated and high quality BIM objects straight into the BIM software ArchiCAD,” said Stefan Larsson, CEO of BIMobject AB.

What local product would you like to see connected to ArchiCAD in SADC

Screen Shot 2013-04-10 at 1.41.49 PMAs today and tomorrow are local manufacturer and specifier interview days ( see related post here:
http://archicadsa.org/2013/04/10/manufacturer-supplier-interviews-jhb-15-16-april-2013/
), we thought it would be a good opportunity for you the users in SADC to express your views on which manufacturer product and specifier systems you would like to see connected to ArchiCAD.

Several opportunities exist to connect suppliers and specifiers to your ArchiCAD project, such as:

  • supplier 3D objects, for modelling & scheduling
  • supplier BIM objects, for modelling, scheduling, specification & energy calculations
  • product specifications without objects, for scheduling, specification & energy calculations

If you use specific supplier or manufacturer products or a specification system regularly, take this opportunity to highlight them to us. We will endeavour to establish contact with your supplier, manufacturer or specifier and attempt to connect their systems to ArchiCAD. You may start the conversation by commenting at the bottom of this post.

GRAPHISOFT ArchiCAD Receives IFC Certification 2.0, Passes COBie Design Challange

Screen Shot 2013-03-26 at 9.59.46 AMBUDAPEST, March 26, 2013 – GRAPHISOFT announced today important milestones in its support for Open BIM with ArchiCAD having successfully passed both IFC Coordination View 2.0 (Certification 2.0) and the buildingSMART alliance 2013 COBie Challenge.

ArchiCAD is now certified for the IFC 2×3 Coordination View Version 2.0 export, making ArchiCAD among the very first to achieve this certification as of 12 March 2013, and is 100% COBie compliant (“buildingSMART alliance January 2013 Challenge”, Washington, DC).

Screen Shot 2013-03-26 at 9.59.59 AM“It’s not enough for us to champion IFC as an open-code standard format; we strive to support our customers with reliable open collaboration workflows with other building professions as well.” – said Ákos Rechtorisz, Open BIM Program Manager at GRAPHISOFT.

The Coordination View was the first Model View Definition developed by buildingSMART International and is currently the most widely implemented view of the IFC scheme. Its main purpose is to allow sharing of building information models among the disciplines of architecture, structural engineering, and building services (mechanical).

The COBie specification requires the support of the IFC 2×3 Basic FM Handover View, an extended version of the Coordination View developed by buildingSMART. It defines general requirements for information handover to facility management. Support for COBie is important in the US as well as in the UK and all other English-speaking countries.

GRAPHISOFT Releases Feature Upgrade to BIMx Mobile

Screen Shot 2013-03-15 at 11.07.13 AM

BUDAPEST, March 18, 2013 – GRAPHISOFT announced today updates to BIMx mobile for iOS and Android devices, with the latest innovations for its cutting-edge communication and presentation tool for BIM projects.

The latest version of BIMx includes important bug fixes and new features such as:

  • Real-time 3D Cutaway function;
  • Improved rendering technology;
  • Increased performance.

With the real-time 3D Cutaway function, users can dynamically cut the BIMx model with a horizontal cutting plane. This offers a floor plan-like overview of the entire model allowing users to locate internal model parts that may be hard to find using the explore method.  3D Cutaway provides an easy-to-understand view for non-professional viewers.

The new rendering engine provides a shorter model loading time and a significantly better user experience during model navigation as a result of an increased FPS (frame per second) rate.  This results in two to three times faster on average loading time and less memory use, allowing larger models to be opened.

About BIMx

BIMx is an interactive environment that allows users to explore full BIM models without holding a license of the professional authoring software in which the building model was originally created.  With BIMx, ArchiCAD users have been able to publish self-running BIMx models for their clients to run on desktop computers (Win/Mac), as well as on iOS and Android devices putting BIM into the hands of all stakeholders not actively involved in the actual creation of the BIM model such as contractors, builders, clients, owners, and principals of design practices.

Create Custom Truss

It is quite an easy process to create a custom truss in ArchiCAD, it only take lines to create, just follow a few easy steps outlined below.

First go into section view

Select line in the toolbox and draw a truss on a desired location

Take note that the lines act as an axis hence the assigned thickness of the truss projects from the centre.

After outlining the truss drawing, you may highlight a multiple of lines or a single line and go to Design > Design Extras > Truss Maker > Create Truss as in screenshot 1 below

Truss Maker settings dialog box will pop up, assign attributes and truss profiles as in screenshot 2 below

aaaaaaaaaa

After assigning attributes and truss profiles click Ok, a save truss dialog will appear as screenshot 3 below, type in the name of the truss and click Ok, it will be saved in the embedded library and created on the floor plan as per screenshot 4 below, click Ok.
